Mangas Centered about Women that are Hidden Gems
For my first post about recommendations: I'd like to talk about mangas that are not exposed in the mainstream limelight. Basically, underrated although it's good. Once again, I'm putting a disclaimer that what I'm writing is purely based on opinion and if you disagree, you can softly tell me why you disagree and I'll try my best to understand where you're coming from.
I'm not going to rank any of these recommendations because I don't have it in me to pick a side and tell everyone that this certain manga is the best! Warning: Most of these mangas are on going (in scanlations) So, if you really want to read it, sit down with me and let's wait.
1. Ran and the Gray World by Aki Irie [Completed]
So, this is a manga that I've come across while browsing in Tumblr and I was intrigued by its art. I'm a sucker for good art so I immediately searched it and read the manga.
The manga is about Ran, she's the youngest in a family of sorcerers. Her mom is the most powerful sorceress and really really hot. I really have to put emphasis to that because she's hot af. To not confuse the readers because I remember being confused af with Ran's age but Ran is a young girl! She just have the power to turn to an adult when she wears her magic sneakers. Is that a spoiler? Hmm. meh. idc.
So, the manga focuses more on the Ran's coming of age, so there really is a self growth and development for the main character and I love that for me! The supporting characters are also cute to boot and they have such fun personalities. I also have to add that please remember that Ran is a child here, so some of her decisions and opinions are coming from a child.
2. No Problem Kazoku by Nagi Mugimori [On-Going]
So, Kokoro is a high school girl with a lot of problems with her family. Well, she wouldn't be so stressed af if her father didn't make a f*cking doll as a wife and all of them and family friends should just accept that. I swear to god whenever I read this, I really feel bad to this young woman. She shouldn't even be subjected to this so much emotional trauma! Where is the funding for her therapy?
Basically the manga sums up how Kokoro tries her best to hide that family secret and at the same time, taking care of her "supposed" mother, doing chores, dealing with the trauma of being a high school student. God, I just want to hug her.
The manga deals about self growth, so this really pops my self growth boner. Please do try and suffer with me. No, I'm kidding. The manga has its own charm, you have to read it to know why.
3. I Love You Baby by Mikko Komori [Completed]
This manga is so cute! And also about self growth too. Yeah, yeah I love my women overcoming their struggles and growing from it.
So, Mirei is a cute 7th grade student and when I say she's cute, she's really really cute, her cuteness is really known by the nearby schools. However, due to her popularity and attractiveness, it also has become a hassle because her parents are strict and she's usually the victim of sexual harrassment. Fck men, honestly. Leave the poor girl alone.
Then she mets this boy who is the same age as her but just short. He a smol boi. Basically, this manga is just cute and there's no disturbances of a love rival. Everyone supports them because they are cute af. If you want a feel good manga, you should try this. It only has 28 chapters, so I think you could binge read this in one sitting.
4. Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty by Megumi Morino [Completed]
This manga....THIS MANGA. Okay, this manga focuses on the main couple's individual growth. Satoshi is a high school boy who works as a housekeeper in order to support his family, so whatever his decisions are...it stems from supporting his family.
Then he mets Shizu, who lives alone in a separate house because she has an illness. The two get close but things get complicate when he learned about Shizu's secrets. The manga has too many twists that I'm just left shocked---like girl, what the fck? Also, once again it just pops my self growth and coming of age boner.
The manga just has so much lessons and these lessons just come with tears, I remembered bawling while I was reading this manga. Moreover, there are some characters you would hate but once the author pull you up their point of view, you would be thinking like: damn, alright...fck it,..fine.
5. Koiiji by Takako Shimura [On-Going]
So, this slice of life manga is centered about Mame who has an unrequited love for her friend, Souta for 10 years. While, Souta has a wife who died one year prior. For me, this manga really doesn't have a self growth kind of thing. I don't know, for me, it's more on we, as readers are given the right to see the life of Mame who is a 30 year old woman who is trying to get over her unrequited love.
There's just so many thoughts in my head while reading this manga, there is a part of me that I want her to end up with Souta and there is also a part of me where I want her to move on and she could just get over with Souta. Basically, this manga is basically the point of view of childhood friends whose feelings are unrequited.
6. Peach Mermaid by Haru Akebono [Completed]
If you want a manga that is cute, sexy and funny at the same time--this is the manga. Riku and Rune looks like a normal couple but what people don't know, Rune is actually a mermaid. The manga follows Rune seducing Riku so that they could have sex, however whenever Rune thinks about sex, she turns into a mermaid and the couple ends up not having sex.
What's funny about this manga is the dynamic of the couple, and Rune who is always horny and interested about sexual topics but at the same time, still so innocent. All of the characters are lovable because the author has a way in writing that makes all the characters lovable.
7. Tonari wa Nani o Kuu Hito zo by Yuki Fujitsuka [Completed]
This is a cooking manga with a touch of romance and self growth! So, Suzuna just started college in Tokyo. Living alone, she didn't anticipate it would be hard since she doesn't know how to cook and clean. It's a good thing she has a cute neighbor, Harumi who teaches her to prepare meals.
This is a slice of life manga, and the manga focuses on meals prepared mostly by Harumi. You could also try your own because the manga has a section in the recipes and how you could cook it. The manga is completed and it also has a sequel about the life of Harumi and Suzuna after college.
For me, this manga was refreshing because during the time I was reading this, I was a college student who was preparing to graduate and take a step on a new chapter of my life.
8. Walkin' Butterfly by Chihiro Tamaki [Completed]
Michiko's height is matched only by her complex about it. While delivering pizzas at a fashion show she is mistaken for a model. Mihara, the show's designer, confronts her and tells her that she can't walk the catwalk. From that moment on, Michiko is determined to find her place in the world as a model.
Basically, I just copied the summary. Yep. Anyways, what I love about this manga is the self growth. Yep! It's me, yo girl who loves self growth in my women. Michiko is a hard headed character but at the same time, resilient. She continues to push what she wants despite other people not supporting her. I also love how her motivation is to spite Mihara because that's what we love---self improving to spite men who pushes you down.
This manga is regrettably short and fast paced because I would love it if the challenges she faced are more fleshed out and of course, her overcoming each challenges would be shown but yep. I would still recommend this manga because despite Michiko is a stubborn woman who is a bit childish, it makes you want to support her.
Final Notes:
This sums up some mangas I've read that I think are underrated and needs more exposure. My criteria for making these mangas underrated because I don't see much shoujo manga fans talking about it. Like, there would be few but yeah, still underrated.
I have some other mangas that are also hidden gems but maybe I'll add that to my other blogs. For now, this is some mangas I would like you to read.
